The
first-ever weekday Bandit Cross proved to be another Bandit
success. With beautiful weather and a scenic course that
was primarily run on grass, but which did include two paved
sections and a "gravel bridge" crossing, the race did not
go blistering off the line, but on lap 2, the action heated
up and split the group. Over the next few laps, the riders
in the front group of four would put enough pressure on one
another to cause that group to split in to little pieces,
and unfortunately, a spectacular crash put Jim Nowak off
the back of this group. In the meantime, behind, a few determined
riders continued to pick up those in front of them until
a group of five established itself. This group rode together--but
not steadily. As a result of her "exciting dismounts and
remounts," June would find herself off the back of this group.
Then, as soon as she clawed her way back to the group, she
would attack the group, trying to get a gap prior to the
next set of barriers, a technique she learned from watching
Andy Kerr in the mountains.
